from The New York Times:

Two days later on 17 December, Mr Steele’s second story appeared in the Chicago Daily News. He narrated a few things he had observed in the hope that they would convey some impression of the horrors Nanjing had gone through:

I saw a scene of butchery outside that gate where the corpses of at least 1,000 soldiers lie in every conceivable posture of death, amid a confusion of fallen telephone and power lines and charred ruins ...

These things, too, I ( Mr Steele, an American journalist ) saw:

... Japanese machine-gunners moving through the streets in the moonlight , killing anyone who ran and some who did not; Japanese systematically searching houses and seizing many plainclothes suspects, scores of these bound men being shot one by one while their condemned fellow sat stolidly by, awaiting their turn. ...

I saw the Japanese beating and jabbing helpless civilians, and in the hospitals I saw many civilians suffering from bayonet wounds.

I (Mr Steele, an American correspondent) saw the dead scattered along every street, including some old men who could not possibly have harmed anyone; also mounds of the bodies of executed men.

I saw a grisly mess at the north gate, where what at once had been 200 men was a smoldering mass of flesh and bones.

In another story he published on 18 December in the same newspaper (Chicago Daily News), Mr Steele indicated that the fall of Nanking was an awful spectacle of butchery and confusion:

Patrols of Japanese soldiers moved through the streets, searched houses and arrested droves of people as suspected plainclothes soldiers. Few of them ever came back and those who did said their companions had been slaughtered without even a summary trial.

I witnessed one of these execution parties and I had seen the grim results of others. What is more difficult, I have had to listen to the wailing and sobbing of women pleading for the return of sons and husbands they will never see again.

The scene of Nanjing haunted Mr Steele, and he had no choice but to continue writing about it. In February 1938, he wrote his fourth news report about the carnage, which was published in two installments in the Chicago Daily News on 3 and 4 February. After describing the tragic episodes of Nanjing’s capture, Steele commented that

the Japanese were bent on butchery. They were not to be content until they had slaughtered every soldier or official they could lay their hands on.

Those who surrendered got no mercy. They were marched off to the execution ground with the rest. There was no court-martial, no trial. As might be expected, hundreds of innocent civilians were arrested and massacred during the course of this reign of terror.

Apart from wanton slaughter, Mr Steele reported other forms of atrocities as well. He told his readers that the Japanese had invaded foreign properties plainly marked with embassy notices and flags, including the residence of the American Ambassador, Nelson T. Johnson. At the University of Nanjing Hospital, an American institution, Japanese soldiers robbed the nurses of watches and cash. They even entered the refugee camps, stripping many poor refugees of their few dollars. Mr Steele observed “a campaign of pillage which the Japanese carried out not only in the shops but in homes, hospitals, and refugee camps,” and “saw Japanese soldiers impressing coolies and donkeys into service to carry their loot.”
